Young Grand Designers Win Pet Palace Competition
Caitlin Lethbridge, five from Harrogate, Lara Lewis, 10 from Jersey, and Charlotte McLatchie, 14 from Doncaster, have taken the top spots in The Burgess Premier Small Animal Show's My Pet Palace competition, which encouraged budding young artists and small animal lovers from across the UK to design their pet a palace of the future.
After trawling through hundreds of entries from all over the UK, including a house for a mouse and new digs for guinea pigs, the judges marked Charlotte, Lara and Caitlin the winners, as their designs took into account originality, practicality and animal welfare. Bespoke hutch designer www.runaround.co.uk is bringing the winners' designs to life as part of their prize and the winning hutches will take pride of place at the UK's largest small animal show.
Caroline Lord, from Runaround.co.uk, said: "We received some fantastic entries, but Charlotte, Lara and Caitlin were chosen not just for their creative designs, but for their consideration of animal welfare. My advice when thinking about the ideal pad for your pet would be to find out how they would behave in their natural habitat and the sorts of things they'd probably enjoy doing.
"Small pets love to have the option to move around, play and have fun. They also need somewhere to hide and sleep safely. While we like to be tucked up in bed at night, there are animals who are just the opposite. Night-time can be playtime for them. An outdoor habitat is the most natural so long as you provide a dry, warm shelter or cool shade in summer. Remember that they like to have choices about what to do, just like us!"
